Wesley 2012

Wesley College is back again in Beius

Volunteers from Wesley College, Dublin, are again together with Habitat for Humanity Beius. In just one week, they built a house for a family in need in Stei, a small town 20 km away from Beius. The twenty Irish volunteers worked alongside students from Colegiul Tehnic “Ioan Ciordas”, a school in Beius, who also wanted to give a helping hand. After the house dedication, the Irish laid the cornerstone for the “Wesley Way” project which will take place in Beius in 2013. The Wesley Way project will be a celebration of 10 years of partnership between Wesley College and Habitat Beius, when 250 volunteers (made up of current and former students from the college) will build 10 homes.

Ciumpe Family story

My name is Adrian Ciupe and I am married to Daniela Ciupe since June, 12th 2004. We have 2 sons: Timotei who will be 5 this summer and Isai, who will be 2 at the end of the summer. Since the fall of 2005, my wife and I lived in a one room apartment in Stei, until our oldest son was a little over 2. After that we looked for a larger place to live and in the fall of 2009 we were able to move to Vascau in the house of the Baptist church we are serving. It is a very nice and quiet space for our children, there is enough space inside and a nice yard outside.

The only inconvenient about the house is the temperature inside. The house is quite old, has thick walls, old windows that lose heat and high ceilings (3.1 m) that make it hard to heat the rooms when it is cold outside. Even in May, I had to start a fire. It has been very expensive every year to buy the fire wood we needed and this year – with a more difficult winter – we were left without wood before the cold weather was really over.

A second reason that motivated us to look for a place to live in Stei is the fact that our son, Timotei goes to kindergarten in Stei, which means he needs to commute every day or sleep at his grandparents in Stei. This has been very difficult for him and he is always looking forward to school breaks so he can be with his family. Knowing that both our kids will go to kindergarten in Stei, that I work in Stei and that my wife is in the process of getting a job in Stei, we decided to look for a solution to move to Stei.

It is impossible for all of us to commute every day – it is both hard and extremely expensive. When we moved in the house in Vascau, we did this trying to offer our kids a better place, although we knew the cost would be higher. Lately though, with two children and also with the economical crisis, it has been more and more difficult financially speaking.

While we were looking for the best solution, God made us think of the houses Habitat for Humanity built. We know families that live in such houses so we knew the space offered by these houses is very good for a family with 2 children. Also, the payments for the house and the cost for the maintanance and the utilities is affordable for a young family with average wages. Also, God has put before us an opportunity to buy a peice of land, so we decided to aplly for a house with Habitat for Humanity.
