8,400 hours of volunteering in 6 years

The company Celestica from Oradea has involved more than 1000 employees in the partnership with Habitat for Humanity Beius since it’s start in 2010.

Oradea, 16th September 2015. From 15-25 September 2015, Habitat for Humanity Beius is hosting hundreds of volunteers again from the company Celestica in Oradea. The volunteers will help build 4 houses in just 9 days within the project “Homes for a secure future”.

The collaboration between Celestica and Habitat for Humanity Beius dates back to 2010 when company employees laid the foundation of a house as part of the project by Habitat for Humanity Beius in partnership with the association Caminul Felix in Oradea. Since then, year on year, the ‘celestial’ volunteers have continued supporting the association’s activities and have contributed to the pouring of 10 house foundations, the complete construction of 6 homes and the building of walls for a further 24 homes. Over 1000 volunteers have made this work possible, meaning over 8400 hours of volunteering, that is nearly 3 years of work for an employee who would work 8 hours a day without interruption!

The project “Homes for a secure future” extends over a three year period. The homes are built by Romanian and foreign volunteers under the supervision of Habitat for Humanity Beius’ specialists on land provided by the Real Estate Administration of Oradea. The multi-family homes consist of duplexes and quadruplexes, meaning that two or four families share the same building.

A home has a surface area of 56m2 and is made up of two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom. They will be built with bricks with vertical hollows and the first floor will be built from wood with sandwich walls constructed from plywood, mineral wool, polystyrene, drywall and stucco. These walls together with double glazed windows provide excellent thermo-insulation, such that home will be heated for a very low cost. At the end of this project, 30 families will have a safe, decent and healthy house.

The volunteers will start the work day with a training, in which they will learn everything that is needed to carry out activities on the work site. As such, there is no need for any construction experience and there will be tasks for all, indifferent of their strengths, as they are led and supervised by the Habitat for Humanity Beius specialists.
