Saturday, 16th April 2011, over 600 volunteers planted trees, with a large number of them being mobilizied by HFH Beius. At the end of the day, an important partnership was signed between Habitat and the Forestry Commission “Beius’ woods.

Folklore says that you need to during your life you need to do three important things: plant a tree, build a house and give life to a child. Habitat for Humanity Beius builds homes, hosts families with children and now is involved in replanting of trees. On the 16th April, hundreds of Romanians put the basis and roots of a new future as acres of lands were planted with trees.

HFH Beius builds ecological homes, from wood, a renewable material if we take care to replant. From our involvement in this replanting, we wish to reaffirmour responsibility in the face of nature and God’s creation. Therefore we have mobilized ourselves as well as some Habitat beneficiaries as part of this event and we invite all those who love nature to come together with us on Saturday in Rosia” said Marcel Coroiu, president HFH Beius.

On Saturday morning, a few minutes before 9am there was a lot of traffic on the muddy roads leading to empty hills around Rosia. Hundreds of people of all ages were then climbing the hills to plant spruce, oak and larch trees. At 9 o’clock sharp, it all started and volunteers split up into teams who were digging the holes, others who were transporting the trees and others who were doing the actual plantingJez,Vera,Zamf,Adina,Elkin_P4160065

HFH Beius proposed to participate in this type of event and to sign a partnership with the Forestry “Beius’ Woods” who in turn wish to develop a fund for the area’s forests as well as fuluil a fundamental part of its mission: to ensure a green future of our nation and to increase the capacity to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. It was decided to sign an official partnership between the two organizations at this event with Habitat proposing to mobilize hundreds of volunteers each year to plant trees while the Forestry would sponsor quantities of wood for the construction of Habitat homes for the needy.  As Marcel Coroiu (president HFH Beius) and Eugen Ferko (administrator from the Forestry “Beius’ Woods”, they were applauded by the TV presenter Mihai Tatulici and the senator Cornel Popa.

“The principal of conserving nature is a global value and we are thinking globally. This current action of replanting forests is an important local concrete, responsible step which will have an impact in the longterm.  Uniting together we know that firstly those from the community will have the joy of clean air and also that the needy in the Beius area will have a healthy, ecological home” said Eugen Ferko, administrator of the Forestry “Beius’ Woods”.

The enthusiasm of the 600+ volunteers was so great that in just 3 hours they finished the work that was planned for 5 hours. As TV presenter Mihai Tatulici from Realitatea TV providing live coverage, more seed0lings were brought in and in the end almost double the amount oPlantari_Rosia_2011_P4160060f surface area was plannted compared to what was originally planned! A hundred volunteers were mobilized by HFH Beius from the “Ioan Ciordas” Techinical College and the “Nicolae Popviciu” General School, Habitat beneficiaries, members from the association’s leadership as well as other volunteers.

“I’ve volunteered at the construction of many Habitat homes and I’ve always had a large satisfaction working alongside other great volunteers. Receiving the invitation to participate at this event, I accept with joy and now I realise that I made a very good decision. It’s amazing here and it’s a joy to see how children and older people show respect for nature and plant thousands of trees in this beautiful area where I used to teach Romanian a few years ago.” Said Veronica Popa, a volunteer and teacher at the General School “Nicolae Popoviciu” in Beius.

At the end of the event, the organizers offered everyone a portion of beans from the pot which were delicious!
