“A different type of of school” together with Habitat

Over 100 students from several schools in Bihor country, are giving a helping hand to build homes for the needy

scoala-altfel-2015Within the project implemented by the Ministry of Education “To know more, to be better!” also known under the name “A different type of school”, more than 100 students and teachers have announced their participation to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Beius, to build homes for needy families. Students come from schools in Oradea and Stei, some for them participating for the third consecutive year. Participating schools are: Economic College “Partnerie Cosma” Oradea, Orthodox School “Episcop Roman Ciorogariu” Oradea and National College “Avram Iancu” Stei.

On the first day, volunteers helped prepare the forms for mounting a ceramic floor at the “Housing for a secure future” project in Oradea and then on Tuesday, the pouring of a foundation for a future home near Beiuş. The atmosphere was relaxed, warm and friendly, with pupils and teachers feeling a sense of satisfaction for the work they achieved by the end of the day.

scoala-altfel-episcopia“It is an activity where on the one hand we develop new knowledge and skills, and on the other hand we are glad to help needy people. We have fun building and socializing in a helpful and pleasant way.” said Denisa, a student.

Every year since 2002, Habitat for Humanity Beius hosts international volunteers from schools across Europe or the US. Among them: LeRosey College in Switzerland, Wesley College in Ireland, Bilkent School in Turkey, Herlufsholm Skole in Denmark, International School of Stuttgart in Germany, Central Michigan University, USA etc. With the launch of the “A different type of school”, Romanian schools have begun to be increasingly involved in Habitat for Humanity Beius projects, becoming extremely active in the social domain.

“As a teacher, I have lived an unforgettable experience with my students together with Habitat. It was a lesson of life lived intensely, a time when students were able to clearly distinguish the concepts of “desire” and “need”, being sensitized on the human side, which is very often overlooked in everyday life. The students have understood what it means to help concretely, to commit, to actively and consciously participate in community life. Even if our job as teachers to form specialists is difficult, see, I have succeeded, through this whole experience, to form PEOPLE!” says Mihaela Pap, a teacher at the Orthodox School “Episcop Roman Ciorogariu” Oradea.

Also starting from Thursday, for a week Habitat for Humanity Beius will host a team of 24 volunteers from Rathdown School, a girl’s school from Ireland.
