10th time in Beius

10th time in Beius!

Katie Boland is back in Beius with her 10th team of volunteers to help Jurmut family to live in a decent home. Since her first volunteer experience with Habitat Beius here in 2003, Katie has fallen in love with the association and the people from here and the area.  Year after year, she has returned to Beius to volunteer on the Habitat worksite and in one year she even came twice.

“In 2003, I led my first team to Beius Romania with Habitat for Humanity. Seth Fischer and I knew little about the country, the affiliate, and our team. We were excited to travel to Eastern Europe and thrilled with our project. We worked on a four-family apartment style house right in the town of Beius. It was incredible.” said Katie.

“Emil, our host coordinator, showed us the town of Beius and the surrounding areas. He was so patient with our team and had such passion about his town, affiliate, and country. It was infectious! I knew at the end of the two week trip that I wanted to come back the following summer” continued Katie.

Jurmut family story

Florentina and her son Rares live together with her parents and two borthers in her parent’s house in Beius. The father of her child left when Rares was born. Rares was born with a heart problem and he needs to have an operation but they’ve been able to do this so far. Also the living conditions are very difficult which aggrevates the health of the young one.  So, 6 family members share two rooms. Florentina and the child live in a windowless room and her mother father and two brothers live in the other room depending on when the brothers are home as they work outside of Beius.

„Most of all, I want my son to get better and then to be able to offer him the minimum living conditions. Now, we only have lighte when we turn on the light bulb. It’s inhumane to live like this and especially a small child.” says Florentina

Florentina has made numerous requests to the local authorities to receive a house through the ANL program or from social programs, but she was always rejected because she didn’t fulfil the conditions. Now she has great joy and is looking forward to moving into the new house.
