Easter House 2013

Easter House

Romania and Beiuş in particular have been part of the altruistic life in the past by a particular type of experience which you may call ‘vacation with a purpose’, ‘teambuilding with meaning’, ‘help a man, know a culture’ or anywhere in between. You can build a home and a dream of someone affected by poverty housing during a week or a few days and left behind a legacy of transformation forever. What a difference you can make!

For the past 12 years Habitat here did organize an Easter Build annually. Through this event, we wanted at least one family each year to benefit from a new home around Easter time. Since then, it has become an uninterrupted tradition that those with big hearts have come together to help a family living in difficult conditions to enjoy Easter in a decent house. Starting with a single mom in 2000, Mrs. Burlacu and her 2 children, the yearly build offered a hand up to the needy with the kind support of volunteers.

Also at this event we celebrate love of Christ and God’s commandments telling us to love our neighbor. We want to demonstrate our faith through the support of the poor, disabled, orphaned and marginalized.

In the 2013 Easter Build, during the Holy Week, we are trying hard to build more homes for the needy of our community. And to grow from a one house builds to multiple homes builds. You are an important part of this leap of faith!

Easter House family story

Mihai and Mona are from Cabesti, knowing each other from when they grew up as young children. Both of them are from Familia-Blaj_Cabesti_2013_DSC_2115families with many children. Mihai having 3 siblings and Mona have 8 siblings.  After getting married at the start of spring on the 1st March 2008, they stayed for 2 years with Mona’s parents and with 2 of her sisters.  But after the birth of their son George, they needed to move to Mihai’s parents. They stayed here for a further 2 years along with Mihai’s siblings, but wanting to have more privacy and quietness, they moved into an old rented house in the village. Here they arranged their home with the small number of items that they were able to have.

Mihai’s mother gave them a piece of land close to where they stay at the moment and they chose to build a home there. They called on Habitat’s help and after going through the first stages of selection process for obtaining a home, they received the great joy knowing that they were accepted into Habitat’s program. They joy was so great since their daughter had been born with medical issues and had been through many operations.  Now they hope their lives will follow a normal path and they will be able to offer their two children, George and Karyna, a better life in healthy and decent conditions.

“After I found out that we were accepted by Habitat, I ran home and told Mona the big news. I then ran to the piece of land received from mum and I kept thinking about how our house will be. Then, all night I made plans. Now I look forward to starting work!” said Mihai.

“I want to thank the volunteers even from now, because they help us to fulfil a dream. For a long time I didn’t believe that we would ever succeed in having our own house. Now, I’ve already decided how I want to arrange the kitchen and where to put the children’s beds. And every time I think of this, it brings tears to my eyes” says Mona.
