Youth from around the world volunteer in Beiuş

Seventeen volunteers from the famous school Le Rosey Institute in Switzerland build homes, help orphans and care for stray dogs.

Between 23rd and 27th October, Habitat pentru Umanitate Beiuş will host 17 volunteers – 15 students and 2 teachers from of the most important European schools – Le Rosey Institute. They students come from all corners of the world, including China, Peru, Romania and Mexico and they have chosen to come to our country as part of their school program called CAS (Creativity, Action, Service), which is necessary in obtaining the international baccalaureat. The school offers many different CAS programs from which the students can choose and they can even suggest their own activities that they would like to do. The goal of CAS is that the youth, from practical experience, learn how to be active in the community and how they can help those around them.

“Starting in 2002, we’ve come to Beiuş nearly every year, to a community which we have fallen in love with, to give a helping hand in building homes for families with modest incomes. It’s a very useful and beautiful experience for these youth to have the opportunity to understand the value of volunteering and being involved in helping those in need. This year we’ve extended our participation in the community and at the suggestion of some students we will be involved in other community projects” said Mary Bassiouni, the coordinating teacher of the CAS program.

lerosey2Unlike in previous years, the volunteers decided to make a greater impact in the local community. Together with Habitat, the volunteers will spend 4 days building the home of a young family in Poienii de Jos. With enthusiasm, the youth will be raising the roof and insulating the home.

Besides building the house, the volunteers chose to also support an orphanage in Beiuş and raised funds so they can give small gifts to the children. They will also spend time with the orphans and will try to bring them smiles for the time they spend together. Last not but not least, the 17 volunteers will support the animal shelter in Beiuş by building 10 kennels and providing food and medication.

“The animal shelter in Beiuş is in great need to volunteers, adults or children to support us in our ongoing activities of feeding and taking care of the animals and small repairs etc. We also want to find as many people as we can who will temporarily adopt the cute quadrupeds until we can find them a permanent home or for an animal loving family to take them home and offer them a permanent home. The dogs wait for you to stroke them, play with them and to be taken for walks on a lead!” declared Codruta Goina, president of the Association for Animal Protection Beiuş.

The adventure in Romania for these youth started with a visit to the Bears Cave on Sunday 23rd October and on Friday 28th October they will return to their school where they will share their experiences from Romania with their colleagues.
